The following materials are good references when preparing for the ASP and CSP exams. This is not a comprehensive list. There are many other sources, but these are the ones with which we are most familiar. Many of the texts listed are available at our Bowen EHS Bookstore.
We also sell workbooks with practice problems. They are available through the Bowen EHS bookstore.
Brauer, Roger, Van Nostrand Reinhold, New York, NY.
Comments: A great basic text covering most safety topics. Dr. Brauer spent many years as the executive director of the BCSP. If you thoroughly study this book, you should do well on both the ASP and CSP exams. I highly recommend this book.
Yates, David, CRC Press.
Comments: This is another excellent resource for the ASP and CSP exams. It provides detailed explanations of material most likely to be evaluated on the Safety Fundamentals and Comprehensive Safety exams. The one hesitation I have about the book is the heavy reliance on Wikipedia in the reference citations. The material is strong, and it contains a large collection of important information under one cover. I believe this is one of the best references available in preparation for the ASP and CSP exams.
National Safety Council, Itasca, IL.
Comments: The National Safety Council accident prevention manuals cover most safety topics in reasonable detail. Great source of material in preparing for the exam.

Stewart, James H., et al., Millenium Associates.
Comments: A spiral bound book describing every equation on the previous exam formula sheet handout. Edited by faculty at the Harvard School of Public Health. A quick reference to review specific formulas.
Petersen, Dan., American Society of Safety Engineers, Des Plaines, IL.
Comments: This is the first real safety management book that I've read. It is well written, and it is definitely worth reading if you are a safety professional or industrial hygienist. Many of the management theories are discussed in the text. This is an excellent book.
United States Federal Register.
Comments: The regulations have excellent information on professional practices.

Gonick, Larry and Woolcott Smith., HarperPerennial, New York, NY. 1993.
Comments: A great guide for statistics. Well written and easy to read. Very helpful for people with difficulty understanding statistical concepts.
Overcoming Math Anxiety
Tobias, Sheila., W.W. Norton & Company, 1995.
Comments: Recommended by a previous student on working with math.
NIOSH/OSHA/USCG/EPA
Comments: This text is available for free at this link. It provides great information on working at hazardous waste sites and emergency response with hazardous materials.
Safety Management
Grimaldi and Simonds., Irwin, Homewood, IL.
Comments: An okay book on safety management, but I believe Dan Petersen's book is better.
We have developed sets of flashcards specifically for the Safety Fundamentals and CSP exams. You can check them out here. People generally retain more information when they create their own cards. A low cost way for you to develop cards is to use the card lists from our bookstore, and create your own with index cards.
