This year, my family went to grandma's house for our Thanksgiving meal. My wife prepared three wonderful desserts as her contribution to the feast. We had pumpkin pie in a glass pie dish, pecan tart in a glass casserole dish and apple crisp in a second glass casserole dish. They were delicious. After the meal was over, we enjoyed the extra bonus of bringing home the left-overs.
The mishap occurred while transporting the left-overs home. You see, it is a bit difficult transporting 3 desserts in glass containers at once in a car. My wife drove, so I carried them in my lap. I was full of confidence since I had successfully carried the desserts to Grandma's house, so I had no concerns on the return trip home. The desserts were stacked on top of each other with a wire grate between the casserole and the pie plate on top. The wire grate kept the pie from sinking into the pecan tart filling below.
All went well on the trip home. No sudden movements, and no pie filling on the floor of the car. It was after the car was parked when I had the problem. As I was getting out of the car, the pies tilted at an angle and the top pie slid off landing on the ground with a dull thud followed by three loud proclamations from myself. Ugh!
I felt rather foolish. I am supposed to be the safety guy, and here I made a classic blunder. The load of dessert was awkward and unstable. If I had thought about it much in advance, I would have realized the high risk involved. Perhaps I would have gone beyond just thinking that "I will be careful." Unfortunately, this was not the first time I made such an error, but it's been awhile since I've done such a silly thing. It was a lesson learned again, and I hope it will not need to be repeated.
Learn from your mistakes, and better yet learn from the mistakes of others (including me) and remember to take two or even three trips when moving dessert from the car to the house.
