Straight from Russ's head - intended to support you in your health and safety education.
The USA is having a presidential election this year, and there are several candidates working to become the next President of the United States. It is important to the candidates that they are featured in the news on a regular basis to keep their candidacies alive. In responding to news reporter questions, these candidates will often have short concise answers to questions that may be broad in range and very difficult. These short answers are known as "soundbites". Unfortunately, it appears that some of the candidates' knowledge does not go beyond the depth of the soundbite.
Health and safety professionals must be effective in communicating safety and health principles to their constituents in the same way that politicians communicate with their constituents.
Another testing window for the CIH exam has come and gone and with that some new CIHs were born. We at Bowen EHS, Inc. are happy to be part of this journey with our clients and it's always a joy to hear of their success.
We have heard from quite a few of our clients, both those that were successful and those that will have the opportunity to take the exam again. One client's email stood out to us as it listed why our online class worked for him along with advice to those that may be preparing to take the exam in the future.
From his computer to yours, we hope this client "Musing" is a gift that will help you prosper in your studies and know that we are always here to cheer you on!
"Russ,
First - I wanted to thank you and your team for helping me prepare for the exam. The ability to take the class over 2 months helped in a number of ways:
Many of you who read the free study questions each week will remember this week's question around Thanksgiving safety. When I wrote the question, I had no idea that I would actually be involved in a Thanksgiving mishap of my own.
Many folks are getting ready to take the comprehensive exam for the Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and the Associate Safety Professional (ASP) and Certified Safety Professional (CSP) exams. Time management is critical for passing any of these exams. Here are a few tips to help you through the exam.
Last week, I presented a CIH Exam Workshop in central Tennessee, and one of the suggestions from the class was to use a special scent while studying to take your CIH exam or ASP or CSP exam. The idea is that smell has strong links to memory in your brain. I know that some smells will take me instantly back to my childhood.
Starting this week, we are no longer emailing solutions with the free study questions sent out via email each week. Solutions are now posted in the Basic Membership section of the Resource Center. This should keep our email server happier as the distribution list continues to grow each week.
In the Basic Resources you will find the solutions to the last 4 study questions as well as streaming podcasts and practice quizzes for the CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist) and CSP (Certified Safety Professional) exams.
Are you studying for the CSP Exam and wondering what to expect? One of our clients shared her experience with us comparing the ASP Exam and the CSP Exam. Our hope is that her insights will help those studying for the CSP Exam for the 1st OR 2nd time.
My biggest suggestion for those studying for the CSP versus the ASP is to establish a different study strategy. The ASP seemed more black and white and pertained very well to the reference sheet. The CSP required more in depth thinking and putting you in the shoes of a safety manager. Therefore, the CSP exam required a broader view, the bigger picture of the organization and how safety management fits into that.
If you are preparing for the CIH or ASP or CSP exams, I encourage you to review the comments from our previous clients. Many of the comments focus on tips and references on successful preparation for the exam. Click here for ASP-CSP comments and here for CIH comments. You can also find them under the drop down menus at the top of the page.
You just might be a safety geek if
...you chaperone a Jr. High dance and spend all night worried about the extension cords being a tripping hazard!
It is the time of year when many folks are preparing to take their certification exam. Here are a few tips to consider as you prepare to the Certified Industrial Hygiene (CIH) exam or the Associates Safety Professional (ASP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) exam.
