By the way...I PASSED...
It was harder than I thought!
Thanks for all the advice on the exam. The recommended books were invaluable.

Just Passed the ASP exam. I had very few math questions -- maybe 20 -- and of those, many were engineering economy. A word to all: don't just learn to use the equations -- make sure you are very familiar with all the equation terms. I did notice a number of questions that I had seen before in other study guides. Any guides that have detailed explanations of the answers are well worth the time to review again and again.

I took the CSP exam on Tuesday….and passed! Thanks for all of your help.
There were a lot of management questions, questions on how to establish a training programs, and what seemed to be way to many systems safety questions. Anyway, I'm glad it's over with and appreciate your curriculum focusing my studying energy.

I also would like to thank you for this online class.  In addition to the review of topics I had not seen in many years, I learn a few new topics (e.g., ventilation, noise, etc.) where I had some practical experience but little theoretical knowledge.  I believe this course has provided me a good foundation as I continue to prepare for the ASP and CSP exams.  In review of the workbook I need clarification on a few sections and have several questions that I will send to you in a separate e-mail within the next week.

Thanks for your consideration to the boatswain question, and for the ASP/CSP course.

I will appreciate the algebra and calculator review class.  I haven’t used algebra or touched a calculator  in 25 years.  This is a bit overwhelming to me.  You do a great job and I understand the concepts.  However,  I struggle sometimes with how to use the calculator to set the problems up due to never applying it.  I watch each session at least twice and pick up things that I missed the previous time.  The best thing that seems to help me is to look at what looking in for in each problem , making your conversions, and when you set up the equation the calculator does all the work.  I’ve memorized some equations and will not give up.  I enjoy when I figure it out and it seems so simple and I’m like “that’s it.”  I’m  making my own flash cards and studying the formulas to understand which ones  to use in each word problem.   We went from turning the calculator on to where we are now pretty quick.

To let you know I took the ASP in December and passed as mentioned earlier and April first took the CSP and passed.  Both tests first time, thank you so much for the class.   I will recommend it and Datachem to everyone.

The classes are great by the way.  You present the information very clearly and have a very relaxed and humorous approach.  I am really enjoying it thus far.

I took the CSP exam on friday and passed. The test was made u of about 25% equations, 50% safety management type questions, and 25% engineering economy. I am actually quite surprised that I passed. I did well above average on the ASP exam a couple weeks ago, but I barley finished this test. It was much harder than the ASP. I started by going through all 200 questions and answering the quick ones first. Then I went back to take care of the 50 or so flagged items that took much longer. In the last 5 minutes I made sure that I answered all of questions. I made and educated guess on about 25% of the flagged questions because I didn't have time do the calculations.

Thanks for all of your help. I plan on taking your CIH prep this fall.

I wanted to let you know I just passed my CSP yesterday.  Much more difficult as far as the questions in terms of having to reason things out from the information given.  A lot of questions on PSM, management styles and how you as a safety manager would organize and prioritize a program.  Also different systems analysis.

Again, I can’t thank you enough for providing such a course and teaching it.  I think it made the difference and  helped me to pass both exams the first time.

Today I sat for and unofficially passed the ASP test.  Engineering economy and electrical power shared the top math question honors.  No IH related calculations.  I bought a second calculator for back-up but it wasn't needed as the test computer had a calculator app on the screen.  Hopefully I will be able to take the CSP in another 4-6 weeks.

I took you CSP class last year. I just sat for the ASP exam and passed. Your class was very helpful, thanks! One question that I have is if you can recommend a good reference for engineering economy. This subject made up a large portion of the quantitative questions. Also, can you enlighten me as to how much more difficult the CSP exam is. I was planning on taking it in a couple weeks but I am not sure if I am ready. I would appreciate any knowledge that you may have.

I took the ASP/CSP prep class and completed in Dec 09.  I just wanted to say that I passed the ASP exams and have received formal acknowledgement form the Board.

Your class was a big part of the confidence builder to take the test and to pass it.

I took my CSP exam yesterday and unofficially “passed”.
I studied for probably about 100 hours with varying levels of intensity beginning the 2nd week in November. I used your course primarily to organize my study material into topics as well as some of the course content.
My bases for testing my knowledge was the CSP Datachem Software.
I went through each test question twice. Initially to identify my weak areas and then to test my comprehension at the end. This was the same approach I used for the CIH and it worked, so why not use it again. I also had one of your 50 question study guides. Actually the questions in your study guide were more representative of the type of math questions, I saw on the exam than the ones in the CSP datachem software.

The test took me 5.5 hours to complete.  I am normally a fast test taker but the questions were more like scenarios then quick responses.  I read the majority of the questions twice. There were only a handful of questions that required a quick response.  Most of the answers to the questions were a full sentence long.  There were limited math problems…...  Several on engineering economy (detailed questions).……. Several math problems dealing with statistics…..  In fact unit conversion was basically a problem of every math problem.  It was important to read each problem to determine what they wanted in the final answer.  You could properly solve the problems and then forget the little final step, what they really wanted.

There were multiple questions dealing with statistics, probability vs reliability, product safety,  system safety, safety management, risk assessment.

Personally, I believe as a CIH I was well ahead of most of the students to take the CSP.

I took the ASP and CSP exams 30 days apart and passed both the first time around. I found the extra study materials offered by you to be a great refresher for the exam. It should be noted that there were several enviornmental and management related questions on the exam as well.

January 15, 2010

I wanted to inform you that I recently took the CSP exam and did not pass (bummer). I have not received my official score but the test was more difficult than I expected. The test focused mainly on different safety management styles, cost relationship factors, gas pressure, distance/time of toxic gas traveling down wind, best case scenarios, and a lot more math questions than what other people have told you. I counted a least 42 math questions, some easy some very difficult. There really wasn’t that many technical questions from what I can remember. I know that I purchased the data chem disc and expected some of the same questions on the exam but there were none on the exam. I know my nerves got the best of me and the crazy white board that they provided. The biggest thing was the equations they provided on the test.  Besides the handout sheet there were also equations for certain problems which I’ve never seen before. It really through me off of my game plan. The best thing about taking the test was the fact that I know where I need to focus my attention on and what to expect next time.

Russ, I got my ### kicked. The majority of this exam questions focused on subject matter that I was not prepared for. I am discouraged, I spent well over 200 hours preparing for this exam.

I passed the Comprehensive Exam on 12-29-09 (just 22 days after passing the fundamentals). Thanks for all the help and encouragement. Your course confirmed my readiness and filled in some of the gaps to help me prep.

I took the ASP today and my unofficial results are that I passed.  I can't believe it, I felt like I should have studied more while taking it.  Credit goes to your class!

My suggestions when asked are: your class, Datachem and read the Brauer book. What do I need to do in prep for the CSP Exam?

December 21, 2009

I took the Comprehensive Practice Exam today and passed! My test was full of calculations. So many that I actually did not complete the exam. I was just filling in answers at the end just to have an answer picked before time ran out. I guess I must have done well on the ones that I did have time to think through and answer. Thank you for your help.

December 18, 2009

I wanted to let you know I took and passed the ASP Exam yesterday.  There were about three questions I had no idea what they were talking about but the rest of the material was covered in you class.

I had a lot of questions centered on the financial aspect of safety and electricity.

I do not think I would have passed the exam without taking your class because I would have been at a loss as to what I should study and how to go about it.  It was invaluable to be able to ask someone questions instead of trying to figure it out on your own so “thank you again”.

December 17, 2009

Passed the CSP today, was more difficult than I was expecting.  I studied extensively, have taken the ASP and CSP 6 months apart, attended your class and studied both cd preps from ASSE.  Needed more prep on general management philosophy.

Roughly 10% math oriented compared to 20% on ASP
General questions were tougher than ASP, could narrow done to 2 choices then went with my gut.

November 24

Thanks for your help. Your online course did the trick for me. The CSP Exam was much harder and I was not sure after it was all over. I had very few math problems, it focused on Training and Management Questions. The Brauer Book really helped. Thanks again, I hope to take your CIH class one day also.

Russ, I did it.  Thanks to you!
This time, there were a few ventilation questions.... a few radiation-math questions.....  Overall, I found it very similar to the ASP exam.

September 11, 2009

Finally took my exam today for CSP and passed. I was really sweating it, I guessed at a lot questions. The rumor that the math portion is being reduced is baloney. A lot of problems on hydraulics, vapor concentrations, engineering economy, statistics.  Many, many questions on management techniques, many of them having nothing to do with safety, not sure what the sources were but I sure never read them. Quite a bit of ISO, almost nothing on rules and regulations.

Here is a copy of the results of my CSP test. This is the worst score I have received sense I have been taking the test. When I finished the test I really thought my score would be around 50 to 52%. I was shocked when I seen 42.9%.This is the 5th or 6th time I have taken the test. I do not believe it is your study course. Your course was one of my better workshops I have taken. I am not sure what to do. I am open for suggestions. I know that BCSP wants anyone who fails to refer to the examination blueprint in the Comprehensive Practice Guide but that is a broad range of information to study.

I PASSED THE CSP EXAM!!!!!!!! YES!
I TOOK THE TEST THIS MORNING AND COMPLETED IT IN ABOUT 3 HOURS. IT WAS DIFFICULT FOR ME TO GAUGE WHAT WOULD BE THE END RESULT WHILE I WAS DOING THE TEST, I WAS NOT 100% SURE WHICH WAY IT WOULD GO.   OH, THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT. YOU CAN USE ME AS A REFERENCE FOR YOUR CLASS.

June 29, 2009

I just finished lecture 09 last night.  I'm actually beginning to understand the lectures again.  I'll be honest.....the math kicked my butt the first couple of lectures.  Made me feel pretty clueless.  I'm planning on getting through lecture 12 this week.

I passed the ASP exam today!  Yippee!  I've attached the unofficial result. I was stumped by these topics: ...... I'm going to take the CSP soon - hopefully 2-3 months due to the sign up period.  I feel like I'm on a roll and don't want to lose momentum. Thanks for all your help!
