1. Find out the requirements

Make sure you visit the ABIH's site to see if you meet the requirements to sit for the exam(s). Get your paperwork in order (transcripts, work history, etc.).

2. Look at the exam details

This exam is made up of a set of areas called rubrics. Look at it and determine which areas you know and which areas you need to study. This will help you be more effective with your studying. Also note that each area makes up a different percentage of the exam's overall score. You do not need a perfect score to pass. Figure out how much in each area you need to get correct in order to pass.

Look at the references used for the exam. Often these are good study and reference materials to review.

3. Submit your application to the ABIH

They are the ones that determine if your education and experience are enough to take the CIH exam. This is a crucial step before you consider taking an exam prep course. You may discover that you need more qualifying education or experience.

This is extremely important if your education was obtained outside of the United States. The ABIH determines your qualifying educational credits on a case-by-case basis.
