Some Like It Hot: A Practical Approach to Managing Heat Stress and Heat Strain
The incidence of heat-related illnesses is likely to increase as climate changes. As EH&S professionals we must more effectively manage heat stress and heat strain. This webinar will provide you with practical tools you can use to identify, evaluate and control heat stress and heat strain. We will discuss the most common heat-related illnesses and their risk factors. Using case studies, we will walk through using the WetBulb Globe Temperature to evaluate heat stress, as well as core temperature, heart rate, and other physiologic measures for heat strain evaluation. Finally, we will discuss control options, including work-rest cycles and acclimatization schedules.
This webinar is a 1-hour lecture and 30 minutes of Q&A.
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Identify four of the most common heat-related illnesses and their work-related risk factors.
- Describe methods for heat stress and heat strain monitoring.
- Identify the relevant ACGIH TLVs for heat stress and heat strain.
- Appropriately select general and job-specific controls for heat stress and heat strain.
