Biological Safety Basics for the CIH
Biological safety, or biosafety, is the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of biological agents of known or suspected pathogenicity in man, animals or plants. Simply stated, it is the discipline addressing the safe handling and containment of biological hazards. This webinar presentation will provide a basic overview of the main principles of biosafety, which are risk assessment and containment, and will articulate important concepts and areas of particular interest and focus for the CIH community. Ample time will be allocated for questions and answers with the goal that webinar participants obtain a basic understanding of the biosafety discipline and its expected competencies.
This webinar is a 1-hour lecture and 30 minutes of Q&A.
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Define the term biosafety and provide a brief history of the profession
- Understand applicable regulations, guidelines, and references available to the profession
- Review the concepts of risk assessment and containment as it relates to biohazards
- Compare biosafety level criteria with animal biosafety level criteria
