Health Hazards of Chromated Copper Arsenate used in Treated Wood

Start Date: Oct 19, 2021
Course Access until: Oct 31, 2022

Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA) is a commonly used wood preservative that can be deadly if exposed workers inhale the arsenic in a smoke plume or ingest it when concentrated into the wood ash. It can also leach from treated wood and into the surrounding soil and drinking wells. As a safety professional, it is important to know the signs of CCA exposure especially if you work in construction, lumber manufacturing, or anywhere outdoor lumber is being used.  During this webinar, we will explore ways to protect workers from exposure to CCA, how you can choose alternative materials to replace lumber containing CCA, and how to properly dispose of lumber containing CCA.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA) pressure-treated wood
  2. Describe the health risks associated with exposure to CCA.
  3. Prevent Exposure to CCA by replacing CCA-treated wood structures with alternative materials
  4. Safely handle and dispose of wood treated with CCA.
