Iodine 131 Testers in yellow PPE

Iodine 131 - Friend and Foe

Presented: May 24, 2023  Available until: May 31, 2024

Radiation leakage and exposure are big stories in the news. Such leaks do present real dangers and risks, but what are they? What types of leaks pose the most risks, and what are those risks? OESH professionals need to understand those risks to prepare for and possibly prevent future events.

During this webinar, we will highlight several historical events with an iodine-131 release and discuss the impact these leaks had on the environment and surrounding population. Then we will discuss ways to implement mitigation to reduce exposure effects.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss events or activities which have released iodine-131 and the impact on the environment and humans
  2. List the characteristics of iodine-131
  3. Name uses for Iodine-131
  4. Implement mitigation to reduce exposure effects in the event of a release of iodine-131
