How do I know if I need an exam prep course for the CHMM or CHMP?

The following are steps that will help you make that decision AND will help you succeed in your exam even if you do not take an exam prep course.

1. Find out the requirements

Make sure you visit the IHMM (Institute of Hazardous Materials Management)'s site to see if you meet the requirements to sit for the exam(s). Get your paperwork in order (transcripts, work history, etc.).

2. Review the exam details

Each exam has a blueprint. Review the exam blueprint and determine which areas you know and which areas you need to study. This will help you be more effective with your studying. Note that each area makes up a different percentage of the exam's overall score. You do not need a perfect score to pass. Figure out how many questions in each area you need to answer correctly in order to pass.

Notice the references used for the exam. These references are good materials to review while studying.

3. Submit your application to the IHMM (Institute of Hazardous Materials Management)

The IHMM (Institute of Hazardous Materials Management) determines if your education and experience are enough to take the CHMM or CHMP exam. This is a crucial step before you consider taking an exam prep course. You may discover that you need more education or experience to be eligible to sit for the exam.

This is extremely important if your education was obtained outside of the United States. The IHMM (Institute of Hazardous Materials Management) determines your qualifying educational credits on a case-by-case basis.

4. Assess yourself
