Problem-Solving Skills for the CIH Exam

The CIH exam can include math questions—or parts of questions—with no obvious equation provided. While a “plug-and-chug” approach works well when a familiar formula applies, some questions require a broader problem-solving process: interpreting the scenario, identifying relevant industrial hygiene concepts, converting units, making sound assumptions, and determining the most appropriate path to an answer.

CIH candidates may also encounter difficult conceptual questions where the correct response is not immediately clear. These questions can test a candidate’s ability to connect core industrial hygiene principles with practical workplace situations, evaluate competing considerations, and select the best answer based on the information provided.

In this interactive webinar, participants will work through challenging equation-free math problems and difficult conceptual questions in a format relevant to CIH exam preparation. Participants will learn a simple process for deciding whether an equation is available and two practical approaches for solving math-based questions when it is not. We will also provide useful tips for approaching conceptual questions with greater confidence and a more systematic decision-making process.

Objectives

Upon completion, participants will be able to:  

1. Use a simple process for determining whether an equation is available.
2. Work through and solve two equation-less math problems.
3. Apply three basic tips for approaching difficult conceptual questions.

Rustin Reed, PhD, CIH, CSP

Instructor

Dr. Reed is a Certified Industrial Hygienist, a Certified Safety Professional, and an educator whose professional and research experiences have focused on industrial hygiene in the mining industry. He manages multi-million-dollar interdisciplinary health and safety research projects funded by NIOSH. His current research interests include diesel exhaust, heat strain, evaluation of safety training, and the use of machine learning to improve safety and health. Rustin served as the Chair of the AIHA Mining Working Group and the Secretary of the Arizona AIHA Local Section.
