Syllabus
Purpose
The primary purpose of the course is to provide participants with the necessary framework to pass the Construction Health and Safety Technician® (CHST®) exam administered by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP).
Successful completion of the course requirements is expected to result in participants’ increased ability to: (a) pass the CHST® exam; (b) recognize safety hazards and implement safety management theories and process identity; (c) identify, assess, and control safety habits.
Credit
This course contains 15 hours of instruction. 1.5 CEUs are offered for this course.
As an IACET Accredited Provider, Bowen Learning Network offers CEUs for its programs that qualify under the ANSI/IACET Standard.

Course Expectations
- Lectures are held two (2) times per week for 3 weeks and last 2 hours each. The lectures are conducted live and are available as recordings for streaming and download the day after the live lecture. In addition to weekly presentations, participants will be expected to complete multiple-choice homework quizzes and other practice activities. These activities are designed to engage participants and help them retain the information presented.
- A homework password will be given at the end of each lecture. Homework review recordings will be available after each homework assignment is completed.
- Recordings of all class lectures and access to all course activities are available for up to one full year from the course start date through the Bowen EHS® Learning Center. Mac and PC users have the option to download the recordings to keep and use after the course has closed.
Course Objectives
Participants who successfully complete all course requirements will be able to:
- Describe the steps necessary to become a CHST
- Apply safety standards (CFR)
- Define risk assessment and apply the Hierarchy of Controls
- List PPE options and uses
- Describe fall protection regulations and options
- List best practices for materials storage / handling and tool use
- Identify and control risks when conducting hot work, working with electricity and environmental hazards
- Describe ergonomic risk factors
- Correctly use the NIOSH lifting equation
- Summarize excavation and grading requirements and best practices
- Identify a confined space and implement precautions before entering
- Discuss mechanisms of injury including struck by, caught between and caught in
- Describe machine motion and guarding
- Develop a respiratory protection plan
- Address hazards encountered with common substances
- Mitigate risks of work in extreme temperatures
- Identify risks presented by different types of tools
- Create on-site fire prevention programs
- Create EAPs, SSSPs and ICSs
- Identify risks presented by noise and radiation
- Create a JSA
- Use incident investigation methods
- Calculate incident rates
- Label and store hazardous materials
- Respond to emergency events
- Practice safety leadership skills including motivation, communication and coaching
- Describe training methodologies

Requirements
Participants will benefit most from this course if they:
- determined they are eligible to take the CHST® certification exam,
- are working part-time or full-time in construction safety (35% is the minimum) and have duties that require technical skills and knowledge in safety, health, and the environment, and
- have at least 3 years of experience in construction safety.

Completion Requirements
To receive a certificate of completion for this course, participants are required to do the following:
- Listen to all lectures (participate live or review recorded lectures).
- Score 70% or better on each homework assignment.
- Score 70% or better on the Bowen EHS course final exam or makeup exam.
- Complete and submit the course evaluation.
No certificate will be awarded to participants who do not meet the above completion requirements.
Computer Requirements
The Bowen Learning Network online virtual classrooms are powered by BigBlueButton. It fully supports the Windows, Mac OS X, and Chromebook platforms (see below for versions supported). Support is available for iOS (iPads) and Android Tablets. While smart phones can be used, the screens are too small to display all of the aspects of the Virtual Classroom. For the best online learning experience, the use of a device with a larger screen is HIGHLY recommended. A physical keyboard is also recommended.
