Purpose
The primary purpose of the course is to introduce participants to the basics of laser safety including concepts of laser generation, sources of laser safety standards and regulations, performing basic laser safety calculations, understanding of laser-related hazards, and laser safety program administration.
Successful completion of the course requirements is expected to result in participants’ increased ability to:
- Recognize laser safety hazards and provide recommendations for the safe use of lasers.
- Perform basic laser safety calculations.
- Conduct a laser safety hazard evaluation.
- Administer a laser safety program.

- Available for 1.2 CMP credits by the IHMM.
- This course may be eligible for ABIH CM credit.
- This course also meets the requirements for the BCSP® COC (Continuance of Certification) points.

Course Objectives
Participants who successfully complete all course requirements will be able to:
- List the key components of a laser and describe the process of laser beam generation.
- Identify the part of the anatomy impacted by various wavelengths of laser radiation.
- Describe the sources of laser recommendations and regulations.
- Calculate the maximum permissible exposure, nominal hazard zone and the minimum optical density of laser safety eyewear.
- List and describe three beam and three non-beam hazards associated with the use of high powered lasers.
- Provide three examples of requirements for a laser safety program that complies with the ANSI Z136.1 standard.
Course Outline
Course Expectations
- Lectures are held one (1) time per week for 8 weeks and last 1.5 hours each. Lectures are presented LIVE and are also recorded for individuals that miss a lecture. In addition to weekly presentations, the instructor will design different types of activities for participants to participate in every week. The activities may include, but are not limited to: practice activities, multiple-choice quizzes, or small group activities. These activities are designed to engage participants and to assist in the retention of presented information.
- A homework password will be given at the end of each lecture. Homework will be completed outside of class and reviewed at the beginning of the next lecture.
- Recordings of all class lectures are available for up to 180 days from the course start date through the Bowen EHS® Member Center. PC users have the option to download these recordings as well.

Prerequisites
Participants will be most successful in this course if they are competent with basic algebra and trigonometry.
Completion Requirements
To receive a Certificate of Completion for this course, participants are required to complete the following list of items:
- Listen to each of the 8 lectures (participate live or review recorded lectures).
- Score 70% or higher on all homework assignments.
- Score 70% or higher on the Bowen EHS final exam.
- Complete the course evaluation.
Participants who do not meet all of the above completion requirements will receive a Certificate of Participation.
